Velika Planina, Slovenia
The bottom station of the cable car to Velika Planina, a small village close to Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, and only few kilometres from the town Kamnik, gives you a chance to admire the green pastures of the mountain plateau in the heart of the Kamnik Alps. The herdsmen’s settlement on the pasture includes approximately 140 huts.
With its characteristic architecture, these are Velika Planina’s most important landmark. The huts are covered with roofs made of traditional spruce shingles. Some of them are open to visitors, so there’s no reason why you couldn’t spend a night or two like a true Slovenian shepard.

Hardangerfjord, Norway
A traditional log cabin from hundreds of years ago that has changed position during its life. First was part of a mountain farm then it was disassembled and transported on the shore of Hardangerfjord in the Western part of Norway, where it sits today. It is now used as a summer cabin.

I captured this photo while hiking Crow Pass in Alaska. It’s a cabin 3 miles up the hike and is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains near Crystal Lake. Completely alone and surrounded by fog and mountains it is advised to be equipped with plenty of survival gear and supplies.
